Learn More About New York Vacation

When visiting new places, time is the enemy but if you plan to have a a short vacation stay in New York then you should have ample time in this busy city to explore and see all the ‘must do places’. It may be a very busy visitor attraction but you couldn’t visit New York without seeing the Empire State Building. However, it is the Rockefeller Centre that will provide superior views (weather providing) from the top at around 820 feet tall. Tour boats can take visitors out to see the big lady ‘The Statue of Liberty’ but be prepared for long delays these days, the view of her from Ellis Island is an option worth considering.

Vacation

The Staten Island ferry can still be traveled on without cost and can offer excellent photo opportunities of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty, the island is also worth a look and the terminal is a favorite spot for street performers, some are of a professional standard. Of course almost everyone who spends a short vacation in New York City will, at some pint, make their way to the site of where the Twin Towers once stood. While there is a strange eeriness about the place that is larger than you expect at the same time it does not feel as if it needs to be photographed. World famous stores are plentiful in New York with names like Tiffany’s to the many discount stores along Broadway.

Then there is Maceys, where there is always a sale so don’t forget to get your 11 per cent tourist discount card, remember you can look, but don’t touch at Bloomingdales. At the time of writing the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum was closed for refurbishment but should be open by the fall of 2008, this attraction is highly recommended and worth putting on your list of places to visit. The highlight of this museum is the USS Intrepid, a World War Two aircraft carrier which houses the likes of the supersonic plane - Concorde not to mention a number of submarines. The New York City Police Museum is worth an hour if you’re down that way; it’s free to enter but a five dollar donation is recommended to help with its upkeep, because it’s about New York’s finest (and some not so fine), it has some really excellent NYPD souvenirs.

For those who like to see the darker side of a city the Lower East Side Tenement Museum is ideal as it shows the conditions for many immigrants back in 1864. If Central Park is on your list of places to see then there is another museum aptly named the City of New York Museum which has exhibitions exploring the city’s past, its present and the future. The museum is in a beautiful building which is free to enter but a nine dollar donation is normally given with plenty of souvenirs available. For such a large vibrant city, a short vacation in New York should be viewed as minimum if most of the major attractions are to be seen comfortably and not as part of a ‘whistle stop’ tour.
